Going deeper

How we approach fireplaces.

The room's center of gravity

Every great-room design starts at the hearth. We size, scale, and proportion the fireplace to the room volume so it reads as the focal point from the front door.

Wood, gas, or both

EPA-certified wood inserts for the cottage-classic answer, sealed-combustion gas for instant convenience, or both in a primary/secondary configuration.

Hand-laid surrounds

Floor-to-ceiling fieldstone, granite veneer, or honed stone surrounds set by our masons over multiple days for a true hand-built look.

Properly engineered chase

Engineered flue chase, code clearances, fireproofing, and load-rated mantels. WETT certification provided so insurance and resale never become an issue.

What's involved

Every trade in a fireplaces project.

We run the full scope or with vetted partners on a single contract. Here's what typically lands inside this kind of project.

Firebox & insert

Wood, gas, and electric units sized to the room and clearances.

Stone surround

Full-height feature walls in natural or manufactured stone.

Mantels & hearths

Reclaimed timber, live edge, or stone mantels and raised hearths.

Venting & chimney

Direct-vent, B-vent, or full masonry chimney depending on the unit.

Gas line

Licensed gas fitter runs from tank or meter to the firebox.

Electrical

Switched ignition, blower circuits, and TV/AV rough-in above the mantel.

FAQ

Common questions.

Wood-burning or gas in a Muskoka cottage?+

Both work. Wood is the cottage-classic answer, gas is unbeatable for weekend convenience and shoulder seasons.

Can you build a fireplace into an existing wall?+

Yes, often. We assess framing and floor load before committing to a footprint.

What is WETT certification and do we need it?+

WETT is the national standard for wood-burning installs. Insurance companies require it and resale appraisers look for it. Every wood install we do is WETT-inspected.

How tall can a stone fireplace go?+

We routinely build floor-to-ceiling at 18 to 22 feet in great rooms with vaulted ceilings. Engineering and framing scale to suit.

What does a hand-laid stone fireplace cost?+

Most full floor-to-ceiling fieldstone fireplaces with insert and mantel run $35,000 to $90,000 depending on stone, height, and complexity.

Can you add a fireplace to a cottage without one?+

Yes. We add fireplaces to existing cottages regularly, including engineering the floor load, framing the chase, and venting through the roof.

How long does a fireplace project take?+

Most builds run 4 to 7 weeks on site once the wall is opened and framing is approved.

Can the mantel be salvaged Muskoka timber?+

Yes. We source reclaimed beams from old Muskoka barns and boathouses for mantels, custom-fit and finished in our shop.

Do gas fireplaces vent through the roof?+

Direct-vent gas units can vent through a sidewall or up through the roof. We design the routing based on framing and aesthetics.

Do you handle the gas line install?+

Yes. Our licensed gas technicians run, pressure-test, and certify the line as part of the build.
