Going deeper

How we approach patios & interlock.

Built on real base

Excavation to frost depth, geotextile separation, compacted crushed-stone base, and proper edge restraint. The part nobody sees is the part that decides whether the patio is good in 5 years or great in 25.

Flagstone or interlock

Natural flagstone reads permanent and ages into the property. Precast interlock (Techo-Bloc, Unilock) reads cleaner and is easier to repair. We build both, often together.

Built-in features

Stone fire pits, seat walls, integrated planters, outdoor kitchens, and built-in benches designed as part of the patio, not bolted on after.

Drainage built in

Pitch, surface flow, and tie-ins to grade designed before stone is set, so the patio sheds water away from the cottage instead of pooling against it.

What's involved

Every trade in a patios & interlock project.

We run the full scope or with vetted partners on a single contract. Here's what typically lands inside this kind of project.

Base prep

Excavation, geotextile, and compacted aggregate base for zero settlement.

Pavers & stone

Interlock, natural flagstone, or porcelain pavers laid to pattern.

Edging & restraints

Aluminum or concrete edge restraints with polymeric sand joints.

Steps & seat walls

Integrated steps, seat walls, and fire-pit features.

Drainage

Surface slope, channel drains, and tie-ins to keep water moving.

FAQ

Common questions.

Flagstone or interlock for a Muskoka patio?+

Flagstone reads more cottage and more permanent. Interlock is faster, more uniform, and easier to repair. We build both, often together.

How do you stop patios from heaving in winter?+

Properly compacted crushed-stone base, geotextile under the base, and drainage tied to grade. Heave is a base problem, not a stone problem.

What does a stone patio cost?+

Flagstone runs roughly $40 to $75 per square foot installed. Precast interlock runs $30 to $55. Seat walls, fire pits, and steps are priced separately.

How long does a patio build take?+

Most patios run 2 to 5 weeks on site depending on size, features, and base requirements.

Do you build wood-burning or gas fire pits?+

Both. Stone wood-burning rings and engineered gas fire features with stainless burners. Gas requires a licensed line install.

Can you add seat walls and built-in benches?+

Yes. Integrated seat walls in natural stone or precast, often combined with fire pits to create a defined outdoor room.

Do interlock patios need sealing?+

Polymeric sand is mandatory. Surface sealer is optional, primarily for color enhancement and stain resistance on light-colored stone.

Can you tie a patio into an existing deck?+

Yes. Transition heights, drainage, and grade tie-ins are designed before any excavation.

Will the patio shift on shield rock?+

No, if built right. Pinned edges, properly drained base, and stone-on-stone bedding handle shield-rock sites without movement.

How do you keep grass out of joints?+

Polymeric sand instead of regular jointing sand. It hardens with water and resists weed and ant intrusion for years.
