Going deeper

How we approach pergolas & covered decks.

Real timber, real joinery

Post-and-beam in cedar, douglas-fir, or reclaimed Muskoka timber. Mortise-and-tenon and timber-screwed connections where it counts, not just decorative brackets.

Sun-path designed

We study sun angle, wind direction, and view sightlines before locking the footprint so the structure shades when you want and opens when you want.

Snow and wind rated

Engineered for Muskoka snow load on roof structures and Georgian Bay wind exposure on shoreline builds. Sealed structural drawings for permits.

Finished ceilings

Tongue-and-groove cedar or pine ceilings with concealed lighting, integrated speaker zones, and fans wired for shoulder-season use.

What's involved

Every trade in a pergolas & covered decks project.

We run the full scope or with vetted partners on a single contract. Here's what typically lands inside this kind of project.

Structure

Heavy timber or aluminum posts and beams anchored to deck or slab.

Roof system

Louvered, retractable canopy, or solid SIP roof depending on use.

Screens

Motorized phantom screens for bug-free three-season use.

Electrical

Heaters, fans, lighting, and outlets wired into the structure.

Finish carpentry

Tongue-and-groove ceilings, beam wraps, and decorative trim.

FAQ

Common questions.

Do covered decks need a permit in Muskoka?+

Yes. Any roofed structure attached to the house or over a certain footprint requires a building permit.

What does a cedar pergola cost?+

Most cedar pergolas run $18,000 to $55,000 depending on size, beam dimensions, and roof or louver complexity.

Pergola or covered deck, which should we build?+

Pergola for dappled shade and indoor-outdoor feel. Covered deck for full rain shelter and shoulder-season use. Both can integrate concealed lighting and fans.

How long do cedar timber structures last in Muskoka?+

30 to 50 years with periodic stain-and-seal and proper detailing at post bases. Douglas-fir slightly longer with weather-shielded beam ends.

Can you add a louvered roof or motorized cover?+

Yes. Motorized aluminum louver systems, retractable canopies, and sliding glass panels are all options we install.

Will a pergola block our view?+

Properly proportioned, no. We design beam height and post placement to frame the lake, not block it.

Can you tie a new pergola into an existing deck?+

Yes. We assess footings and beam capacity first. Some older decks need reinforcement to carry roof load.

Are pergolas snow-load engineered?+

Any roofed structure is. Open-rafter pergolas are not, but if you add a roof, polycarbonate panels, or louver system, we engineer for snow.

Can lighting and speakers be hidden in the ceiling?+

Yes. Recessed LEDs, in-ceiling speakers, ceiling fans, and heaters routed through tongue-and-groove ceilings during framing.

How long does a pergola build take?+

Most builds run 2 to 5 weeks on site once footings are in.
