Bathrooms are the renovation most Huntsville homeowners start with, and the one where the price range confuses people the most. A keep-the-layout refresh and a full reconfiguration are the same room and completely different projects. The wet wall is what separates them.
In Huntsville specifically, two things drive the scope more than finish selection. The first is the age of the plumbing. Homes in the older parts of town still turn up galvanized supply lines and cast iron stacks, and once a wall is open, replacing that run is far cheaper than coming back for it in five years. The second is water source. Cottages on Peninsula Lake, Mary Lake, and Fairy Lake are frequently on lake draw with a UV and sediment system, which changes fixture selection, pressure expectations, and what a winter shutdown looks like.
Structural work, new plumbing runs, and new circuits are permitted through the Town of Huntsville building department, with ESA notification on the electrical. Cosmetic refinishing is not. We confirm which one your project is during the site visit and handle the application, drawings, and inspection scheduling under the same contract.
Same fixture locations, mid-grade finishes.
Custom tile shower, heated floor, quartz vanity.
Fixtures moved within the existing room.
Walls moved, structural work, new window.
Ranges, not quotes. Every project gets a fixed-scope written estimate after a site visit.
Full Schluter or Kerdi membranes on every wet wall and floor, sloped pre-pans, banded transitions, and pressure-tested before tile. Failures we get called to inspect are almost always membrane shortcuts.
Heated tile floors, towel warmers, sealed exterior penetrations, and freeze-protected plumbing so the bathroom is comfortable in May and protected in January.
Natural stone honed and sealed, large-format porcelain layouts dry-fit before set, and grout color sampled on a panel before the wall ever sees mortar.
Freestanding tubs and frameless shower glass placed for the view, with sightline studies before plumbing rough-ins are committed.

A keep-layout refresh with mid-grade finishes typically runs $35,000 to $55,000. Custom tile showers, heated floors, and quartz vanities push that to $55,000 to $80,000. Reconfiguring the layout within the existing room runs $60,000 to $95,000, and expanding into adjacent space can exceed $90,000 depending on the structural work involved.
Because the toilet drain is the largest pipe in the room and it has to maintain slope to reach the stack. Moving it by two feet can mean opening the floor, rerouting a three-inch drain, adding venting, and in a slab or a cottage on piers, re-engineering how the drain leaves the building. Sinks and showers are far more forgiving. If budget is the priority, keep the toilet where it is.
New or relocated plumbing, new circuits, and any structural change require a permit from the Town of Huntsville building department, with a separate ESA notification for the electrical. Replacing a vanity, a toilet, and tile in the same locations generally does not. We confirm during the site visit.
A properly waterproofed tiled shower with a bonded membrane is the better long-term build and the better looking one. An acrylic base with tiled walls costs less and installs faster, and on a seasonal cottage that freezes it can be the more sensible choice. What we will not do is tile over drywall or use an unbonded membrane, which is where most shower failures in this region start.
Yes, and in Huntsville it is one of the highest-value upgrades per dollar in the entire renovation. Electric mat under tile with a programmable thermostat adds a modest amount to the project and changes how the room feels for five months of the year. It needs a dedicated circuit, which we account for in the electrical scope.
Fixture selection changes. Low-flow valves that behave badly on a variable-pressure lake draw system get swapped for pressure-balanced units that do not surprise you, and we plan the shutdown and drain-down sequence so the new plumbing survives its first winter. If your UV or sediment system is undersized for a second bathroom, we will flag it before we start rather than after.
Three to six weeks on site for most Huntsville bathrooms, longer if we are moving the wet wall or waiting on a specialty tile order. We sequence demolition so the room is only open when trades are actively in it, and we confirm tile and fixtures are on site before demolition starts.
Year-round. Huntsville has a strong four-season community, and we run interior renovations and new-build framing through the winter with the right protection in place. Only certain exterior masonry and concrete pours get seasonal scheduling.
Peninsula Lake, Fairy Lake, Mary Lake, Vernon Lake, and the north end of Lake of Bays, including properties out toward Hidden Valley and the Algonquin Park corridor.
